Pass data between steps
Use actual node outputs to configure the next action.
IN THIS LESSON
- Connect an upstream output to a downstream field.
- Distinguish a template path from a literal value.
Start with an output
Run an upstream step with sample data and inspect its result. Then use the variable picker in a downstream field to select the value you want. This avoids guessing output paths or node names.
Template expressions use double curly braces. For example, a Tables node named tables can expose rows as:
{{tables.rows}}The correct expression depends on the node's actual name and output schema. Not every node adds an output level to its result.
Match the expected type
A field that expects one email address cannot use an entire list of records directly. Select a field from one record, or use a Loop to process the list. Keep JSON objects as structured data when the receiving field expects an object.
Try it
Read rows from a small test table. Inspect the returned rows and pass a single field into a message action. Check the preview before sending.
